What’s the Best Web Browser for HughesNet?

There are many Web browsers to choose from these days: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer, Opera, and others. Basically, any Web browser you want to use will work with HughesNet. It all comes down to which user interface and functionality you prefer, and whether the browser is compatible with your computer's operating system.

What can you do to plug bandwidth leaks?

We want you to be able to enjoy all the fast downloading, surfing and streaming that HughesNet makes possible. That’s why it’s important to be aware of potential bandwidth ‘leaks’ and make sure they are not slowing you down! Here are three tips to keep your connection moving at top speed.

  1. Check Your Browser Settings – Watch out for Web pages that automatically stream videos such as advertisements or TV and movie previews in ‘Adobe Flash’ video format. These can be a huge drain on bandwidth. Most Web browsers allow you to modify your settings to prevent Flash videos from playing automatically.
  2. Watch Video Wisely – Do you use a popular video streaming service like Netflix? Check the settings to see if there is an option for managing bandwidth. For example, Netflix enables you to stream good-quality video without necessarily using the highest setting. This leaves more bandwidth for other uses, and consumes less of your monthly Data Allowance.
  3. Choose Your Backups – If you use an online backup service, it can consume a lot of bandwidth. Rather than backing up your entire hard drive—which probably isn’t necessary anyway— consider backing up only those items that can’t be replaced: family photos and videos, personal and work documents, etc.
Also, timing is key. Schedule backups to happen during the Bonus Bytes period (2AM–8AM), or run manual backups only when you need to.
